The holidays are coming up. Parties, family gatherings, cheese plates, wine, fruit. But what cheese with what wine? What about cheese and beer?  Here, we've compiled a simple wine and beer pairing guide. Not every cheese is included here. However, ALL CHEESES pictured on the "Cheese" page have descriptions with specific food pairings.


Not confident in this whole pairing thing? Hey, fake it 'til you make it. These are just a handful of surefire wine and beer combinations that can do the work of entertaining. If you want to impress your guests, get some good cheese. If you want to make an impression, pick a couple of favorites from one category or the other and make some magic.

  • White wine match best with soft cheeses and stronger flavors.
  • Red wines match best with hard cheeses and milder flavors.
  • Cheese with acid matches well with acid.
  • Fruity flavors with fruity wines. 
  • Stronger cheese is paired with darker, stronger, and more mature wine.
  • Pungent cheeses with sweeter wine. Sweetness in wine balances and compliments the acidity and saltiness of cheese.
  • Sparkling wine breaks the creaminess of cheese. 
  • Parmesan and vintage Cheddar are a safe bet and match well with most wines.
  • Avoid competing foods and wine. Use dry flat bread, plain bread, or crackers to savor the cheese.
